A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

Leap into Action!

Everyone keeps saying that 2012 will be their year. Perhaps the Mayans have us all worked up? Perhaps these 60 degree days in the middle of winter in Pittsburgh no less has us thinking about global warming? Or, perhaps it is the cosmic storm that the meteorologists recently discovered? I have no idea what the reason is. What I do know is that the people in my life are doing more, talking less and eschewing procrastination. My sister even gave up wasting time for Lent. She is that committed to her self improvement project and her goals. I am not immune. I have hired an intern to help me with some personal projects. And she is great. So, I'm caught up in the frenzy and committed to taking some of my projects to the next level this year. Now is the time! Carpe diem and all that jazz! After all, this is a Leap Year. So we have 24 extra hours to accomplish our goals.

Happy Leap Day!
