A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

Toddler and Mommy Celebrating National Ice Cream Month with Giant Eagle

[I was supposed to post this yesterday, but you know...]

July has been hot. So, you've probably been consuming a lot of ice cream.  Did you know that July is actually National Ice Cream Month?!

The other night, thanks to Giant Eagle, I was able to combine my parenting and blogging worlds. They invited some bloggers to the Giant Eagle headquarters for a good old fashioned ice cream social! They had 52 flavors of ice cream, a sundae bar, fruit pies, cupcakes stuffed with ice cream and the most delicious frozen fruit bars you've ever had. I had a coconut and a lime one. I combined them on my plate and it was quite tasty. It was kind of like cocktail!

Honestly, I don't usually like coconut flavored things.  Indeed, as a child, my sister and I were united in our hatred for coconut. But since it was free I thought I'd try it. I think reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom every night with all of the talk of the letters going up and down the coconut tree that got me craving it.

The best thing about the event was that I was able to bring the toddler and my mom with me. Both of them had a ball! The toddler enjoyed all of the ice cream and the balloon animals that the artist was making.  I may have to reign in her grandmother though. Somehow she left with a bouquet of helium balloons because, "the toddler wanted them."  We also left with a whole apple walnut pie for my dad.

We enjoy our events!

Here is the toddler with her balloon animals.

This is my favorite photo of the toddler at the event.  Her grandmother scored her these balloons!
