One Secret to Success for a Working Mom, Expand Your Village (Jack and Jill of America)

Jack and Jill of America member and her daughter Recently, I have become keenly aware that good kids are created by accident. They become good because someone made a concerted effort to pour positive things into them--things like, honor, discipline and respect for others. These qualities are taught through lessons and by observation. For that reason, I have been actively considering how to give my children more examples of people who embody those qualities.  Indeed, raising my children to become good people is my most important job.

A Peek Into the Life of a Working Mom: The Weekend Without Daddy

Like most working moms, I look forward to the weekend. it's a time to re-connect with the family and complete some household chores. This weekend was interesting though. I got a taste of what it is like to be a single mom. Andre was engaged in another project, this time for my mother out-of-town. The only thing better than having him occupied on a project for family is having him out-of-town doing it!

Surprisingly, the toddler and I got along pretty well. I told her that it was our party time. She asked whether we got to play music and dance. When I assured her that it did, she no longer seemed to miss her dad as much. It's amazing how kids minds work...

We did things that we aren't able to do when he's around. We lounged in our pajamas a good bit on Saturday and Sunday. I watched some reality TV. We went to the mall for no reason except to see the pretty clothes and buy make up. We also listened to the "Grease" soundtrack over and over. Nobody rushed us. Nobody complained about being at the mall. And nobody made us turn down our music!

I also did some mundane, but mandatory, things like clean the kitchen, do the laundry and clean the bathrooms. And amazingly, they all stayed clean! :-)

On Sunday, we made it to Point State Park to see the HUGE rubber duck that is visiting Pittsburgh. It's been here for a few weeks, but today was the first time we made it there. It was a sight to behold! And even though part of me was cynical and thought, "it's rather silly for us to get this excited for a duck", the other part of me thought, "I don't know why, but this duck makes me smile!" As you can tell, it made the toddler smile too. :-)

How did you spend your weekend?!
