(PITTSBURGH – March 6, 2014) – The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will reopen the PNC Carousel to the public on Monday, April 14, kicking off a new season of special events and programs at Schenley Plaza in Oakland. The young and young at heart are invited to enjoy free carousel rides from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month, June through October. In May the free carousel rides will happen from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 11, in conjunction with the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure, and a variety of entertainment.
The PNC Carousel, with its distinctive striped top, Victorian design and 15 colorful, whimsical animals, has become a popular destination for families since the opening of Schenley Plaza in 2006. The PNC Carousel will operate from noon to 6 p.m., April 14 through May 10. Beginning Sunday, May 11, Mother’s Day, hours will for the first time be extended to 10 pm through August 31, giving intrepid young riders even more opportunities to enjoy the carousel.
“We have seen such a wonderful response to the PNC Carousel, and are delighted to be able to offer evening hours for the first time this year,” said Meg Cheever, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. “Oakland is a vibrant, lively destination in the evening, and we hope that families will enjoy coming out to Schenley Plaza to relax and enjoy an after-work or weekend evening picnic, a meal at one of the kiosks or at The Porch Restaurant, and a spin under the stars on the carousel.”
Summer programming at Schenley Plaza will also include the Ultimate Block Party on Sunday, April 27 presented by the Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative, the Mayfair Arts and Crafts Festival, lunchtime and Saturday morning yoga, lunchtime music concerts, a weekly farmer’s market, and more.
