One Secret to a Working Mom Success: Celebrate the Seasons With Traditions

Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. "Family traditions counter alienation and confusion. They help us define who we are; they provide something steady, reliable and safe in a confusing world."— Susan Lieberman   Traditions have a way of defining a family, provide stability and give hope. They are especially important for woking moms who spend so much time working to provide for their family that they may miss some of the "traditional" mom things like bake sales, volunteering at the book fair, and a host of actual and seemingly made up holidays.  They are also important for families trying to reinvent themselves in the wake of d...

Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Friendships matter

@Tonic

I participated in a leadership program through the Mecklenburg County Bar Association early in my career. One of the other participants, a seasoned lawyer commented, "There is more to life than work and family." She was already a mom. I had not yet decided that motherhood would be a part of my journey. However, what she shared resonated with me.

After she made that comment she discussed the sometimes thankless job that is motherhood and her career challenges. She said that if one only focused on work and family you might feel inadequate. For those reasons, she volunteered her talents and treasure to non-profit boards and preserved her friendships. She said that if you spend at least some of your time devoted to causes you believe in that are grateful for your contributions, and spent time with friends who only want to share your time, both your career and your family life were sweeter. I tend to agree with her.

These photos reflect my time with my friend Ayana after an event last week for a board that I serve on, The Women and Girls Foundation. The organization just launched a three year strategic plan. The primary issue that we'll be working on is paid leave. The organization is also actively working to create a world where women are paid equally, are able to live safely, and enjoy the same opportunities as men. In a word, we are creating a Femisphere!

After hearing about that, Ayana and I couldn't wait to toast to the cause privately and catch up on our lives. It was great and I was grateful that I was simultaneously able to serve my community and enjoy some girl time in one evening. Here's to good causes, camaraderie, and cocktails!
