A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

Hurricane Irma Made Me Count My Blessings

Life is a series of moments. The secret to success is maximizing the good ones and minimizing the bad ones. As working moms we know that we'll have days that are punctuated by tears, traffic, and trials. However, other days are full of family, fun and frolicking on the beach!

I'd love to say that I'm an expert on this type of living. However, I'm not. Sometimes, I fall short. I major in the minor, perseverate on the negative and lose my cool and my patience...

That said, I try to remember to live this way and I look for reminders in my experiences. Recently, we were vacationing at Myrtle Beach while the weathermen were forecasting the effects of Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean and Florida. During that time, I felt compassion for those affected. I also felt incredibly grateful to be sharing such enjoyable times with my family.

I decided to share these thoughts with you in case you needed a reminder as well. Hope all is well in your world!

(Our prayers are with those who faced the affects of the recent Hurricanes in the Caribbean, Florida, and Houston.)
