A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Flexibility, one secret to success

Andre got our son ready for school today, like he does most days. Today, when the boy and I arrived at his school I noticed that his pants were extremely short. Like my uncle would say, it as if he were awaiting a flood. I exclaimed, "Look at how short your pants are!" I immediately regretted my comment. We were already late for school and I didn't want to high jack his day by making him self conscious.  Still, I didn't want him to look like a fashion victim all day.

So, I did the only thing that I thought I could do.  I converted the fashion faux pas into a fashion choice. I folded his pants up a bit to make the length look intentional. He was confused by my rolling his pants up and initially expressed it. However, then, he just rolled with an decided to enjoy his day.

I think he pulled it off. what do you think?!
