Easter Reminded Me of the Miracles That Are My Children

Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. Below is a tale of my road to becoming the mother of three. It was a road filled with joys and disappointments. However, I wouldn't giving nothing for my journey now. Here's to embracing every step of the journey, even the painful ones, and embracing the lessons learned along the way.

With a Little Effort Working Moms Can Create Magic!

Take Your Child to Work Day 2016

Last week was Take Your Child to Work Day" otherwise known as my daughter's favorite day of the year. She almost missed it because the invitation came out while I was on maternity leave and I neglected to respond. Honestly, I didn't realize it was coming up until the afternoon before. I was planning to let it pass and ask for an apology because I thought she wouldn't know when the date either.

I have no idea why I thought that because I know my daughter. Her values are fun and friendship. Since she associates both with Take Your Child to Work Day she was keenly aware of the date and somehow knew the list of activities. She was so on top of it, that I thought she may have hacked my email!

My brother gave her a ride last week to gymnastics (shout out to the best uncle ever!!!) and he told me that she was going on and on about how she was going to work with me the next day and what was going to happen. I told him that I had dropped the ball. Then, he challenged me and said, "C'mon, I know you can get the coordinator's cell phone and make it happen." He was right. I rose to the challenge, she was able to participate once again and she LOVED it!!!

My colleague who organizes the event ensures that the kids have a full, exciting  and fun day. They also learn about careers and job skills. In one session I observed, there was a discussion about listening. When asked why it was important my daughter responded, "You have to make sure you listen because if you don't you can't go on field trips or have recess and have to sit in a row!" I still need to talk to her about the significance of row sitting. It sounds like a form of torture that was outlawed in the last century... Still whatever it is, that penalty has made an impact on her and she listens!

Anyway, I am thrilled that I was able to make this happen for her. Indeed, I felt like a magician when it all came together. I had to drive past where she needed to go to drop both boys off at school and then daycare, drop her off at the event, drive to my office, work and then do the reverse! It was a lot of extra effort, but it was so important to her that it was worth it. So, I was happy to do it. Sometimes, I drop the ball, but this time, I knocked it out of the park!

Special thanks to Lisa Newcomb who makes the event possible.
