Easter Reminded Me of the Miracles That Are My Children

Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. Below is a tale of my road to becoming the mother of three. It was a road filled with joys and disappointments. However, I wouldn't giving nothing for my journey now. Here's to embracing every step of the journey, even the painful ones, and embracing the lessons learned along the way.

Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.  – Maya Angelou

  • Meet Julie Cole, who defines herself as "a recovered lawyer, mom of six and co-founder of Mabel's Labels". In a word, Julie Cole is a woman who is showing us all how to do it all--well!
I am honored to be the Key Note Speaker for this year’s, Bloggy Con convention. The title of my presentation is, “Leaning in Without Tipping Over”. As I prepare for my presentation, I am reminded of last year’s conference when I had the pleasure of meeting, Julie Cole, the Co-Founder, Senior Director Public Relations of Mabel’s Labels. Julie is successful, gorgeous and the mom to six kids. In many ways, Julie’s life could be the sheet music to my talk.

I had the privilege of interviewing Julie last year. And she shared some of her secrets to success. To learn more, read below.

My Interview With Julie Cole, Co-Founder, Senior Director Public Relations
 of Mabel's Labels

Mable’s Labels is a great company—$10 Million in sales—that has a cool working mom named Julie Cole as Co-Founder, Senior Director Public Relations and you need to know about her. I first met Julie Cole at Bloggy Con. As I was listening to her speak about how to "Using Your Personal Brand to Leverage Your Professional Brand" I was in awe. First, she looked like the mom you want to be. She was thin, composed, and stylish. Second, she was like my spirit animal. Like me, Julie is a lawyer and a blogger. However, she has left the law and leveraged her entrepreneurial venture, "Mabel's Labels" into a very successful business. She's done this while raising six (6) kids. So, she basically had me at "hello". I was instantly fascinated by her story and curious about how she had attained success as a professional and as a mom. I knew I had to interview her when I heard her say that she ignores her kids’ tantrums and doesn't bring their lunch to school if they forget it because "they won't starve". My thought was "Julie is a boss!" I instantly knew that interviewing her would teach me and my readers a lot. So, I was overjoyed when she agreed to be interviewed.

One of the things that drew me to Julie was the ease with which she approached her presentation and her practical approaches to success. First, Julie looks like she’s a former runway model.  Second, she is so comfortable addressing a crowd. It is clear that she is on the path she wants to be on. Third, she is totally down to earth. She does not put on airs or pretend like she does it all because she is super human. Indeed, her attraction and her appeal is in her authenticity.

Julie Cole’s Secret to Success

When I spoke with Julie I was really interested in how she makes life work with six children, let alone making it work as a working mom. Here’s what she said. She loves her kids hard and empowers her children to take responsibility for their own lives.  She described herself as an “I’m a “if you’re hungry, make yourself some food” kinda mom”. She also commented that she lets her kids feel the responsibility for their own failures. If they forget their lunch at home, she doesn’t necessarily take it to them because the lesson is important.

"Lower your standards." Julie Cole

One thing I admire about Julie is her ability to make decisions that promote her overall well being. She reinforced a lesson that I have learned from many other successful moms, only fools attempt to do everything themselves.   First, she believes that it takes a village to make it all work and has created that village. She employs a nanny. She didn’t get the nanny until her fifth kid was born, but she eventually learned the lesson! She also has a team of talented people around her to make her company work. Julie is also fortunate enough to be able to hire a housekeeper. And, she relies on a network of family and friends to help her maintain her sanity.

I think what helps motivate her to keep juggling all of her responsibilities is that she loves what she is doing. Fundamentally, she loves connecting with other moms. So, inventing products that help make their lives easier is second nature. Second, her love of connecting motivates her to maintain her blog and travel the speaking circuit. Third, she loves impressing her kids. It turns out when moms work, it fills their kids with pride and gives them something to brag about. Julie gets a real kick out of hearing her children speak about her with pride.

Get this, Julie would even continue her business even if she hit the lottery. That is a testimony to the type of life she has built for herself--one full of intention, purpose, and success.

My interview of Julie inspired me so much and confirmed what I suspected when I first met her, she really does have it all!
