A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

Us Working Moms Love Our Weekend Breakfasts

Delicious breakfasts...
One of my favorites things about weekends is the ability to enjoy a leisurely breakfast.  As a working mom of three, there are so many sacrifices that I make for my kids. Some of the sacrifices have happened organically and some have happened unconsciously. I just look back over the things that have changes since I've become a mom and realize that this.

Life. Is. Different.

Still, one thing that has remained the same is the joy I get from enjoying my weekend breakfast.  It is one of life's greatest pleasures and I enjoy it. Now, I make the kids' breakfast first. So that I ca enjoy mine. Sometimes, mine is interrupted in order to fill a glass of a small person, give someone more sausage or to replenish a cereal bowl. Still, I get time to enjoy my weekend breakfast. And the laughs of my children that provide the soundtrack to my weekend mornings make the meals that much sweeter...
