Beyonce, One Working Mom Who Rocked the VMAs

Image
Who doesn't like Beyonce? As Saturday Night Live illustrated with its Beygency skit, liking Beyonce is almost an American value.  On this Friday, I wanted to share a photo from the MTV Video Music Awards  that focuses on Beyonce, the working mom. The photo represents the moment Beyonce received the "Vanguard Award" at the Awards show.  In my opinion, it captures what all working moms strive for. This Working Mom Can Relate to Beyonce's VMA Moment

Today is National Donut Day! (#NationalDoughnutDay2014)

Image
Working moms like to celebrate and like a good deal. The only thing we like even There will always be a place in my heart for donuts, even in this increasingly low carb, no carb, gluten-free world, in which we live.  There are few things that smell or taste better than a hot glazed donut.  Seeing the glaze drip down the pastry is the equivalent of a striptease.  It beckons you, tempts you and begs you to devour it. Most who try to resist fail.  That fact was the basis of Krispy Kreme's entire marketing plan! You Can Get Free Donuts Today

Working Mom Tips for Surviving a Cookout with a Toddler

Image
Probably even more than other parents working moms value peaceful times with their children. Since our jobs pull us away from our kids and sometimes exhaust us making us more impatient than we'd like to admit, we need helpful tips to maximizing our fun and minimizing our headaches. Once our kids become mobile they become more curious about the world and harder to control. That creates challenges for their already maxed out parents. Below is a link to an old post that provides working moms with tips on surviving a cookout with a toddler. The tips will serve you well throughout the cookout season. Enjoy! Chaton's World: A Working Mom's Quest for Balance in Stilettos: Surviving a Cookout with a Toddler in the Country : Memorial Day mean 'tis the season for cookouts. Working Mom Tip: Making Dinner Fast and Nutritious

Image
Chicken soup is a common classic comfort food that might be found across cultures. (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) I was reading "relish" a magazine insert that I received in my recent subscription to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and discovered a recipe that I thought would be up the alley of all of my non-vegetarian working mom friends. It was described as "[a]  ridiculously simple and hearty rice soup" and I agree. With fall upon us, there is nothing I love better than soup. You won't see this on a commercial, but soup is a great way to maintain your sexy! It's filling and broth based soups are generally low in calories. They can also be a great way to get nourishing food and maintain your figure. Here's the recipe that I discovered, "Easy Chicken and Rice Soup" by Jill Melton , located at http://relish.com/recipes/easy-chicken-and-rice-soup/#ixzz2gb3PmwAJ   Recipe by Chatón for another ridiculously simple

Confessions: My Love Affair With Summer (#SummerTimes)

Image
I've had a love for Summer for some time. I first publicly documented this love sometime ago in a blog post entitled, "The Summer is my New Boyfriend". (Below is a link to that post.) Now, I think it is more accurate to say that the Summer is my tried and true lover with whom I've having an intense affair.   Since I live in Pittsburgh , my time with Summer is fleeting. Also, as a mother who works full-time outside of the home, I am pulled in a lot of directions. Many of those directions involve attending meetings in conference rooms that have re-circulated air. So, I spend a great deal of time indoors staring at the sun but unable to feel the heat.    I savor my summer experiences.   For these reasons, I savor every moment that I get to spend enjoying the summer. I try to run along the river on most mornings. Feeling the sun shine on me and the intensity of the sun reflecting off of the water energizes me.

A Peek Into the Life of a Working Mom: Working Mom Guilt

Image
Toddler when working mom leaves the house “It plagues me. I feel intensely guilty for working … You have to be able to provide for your kids. But I feel like it’s a weird modern phenomenon that you always feel guilty for it.” -- Melissa McCarthy, actress, mom to two girls under 6 Recently, a friend confessed that she has been feeling really guilty about leaving her toddler when she goes to work. He has been crying and saying, "mommy don't leave me!" Nothing tugs at the heart of a working mom like hearing her child plead for her to stay. As the mom of a toddler I have learned that they can be unpredictable. You can be on a roll and then out of nowhere she'll be distraught when I leave for work.  Once I came home for work because I forgot something. When I left to return to work my daughter cried harder than I had ever heard. I felt terribly and wondered whether I was doing the right thing.

A Peek Into the Life of a Working Mom: A Trip to My Alma Mater, The University of Virginia

Image
We are in Charlottesville, Va. this weekend, which is the home of my alma mater , The University of Virginia . I am excited. Andre and I have been here together a couple of times before, but it is the toddler's first time. I am thrilled to share this place that I love with her. Who knows. Perhaps we'll plant a seed this weekend that will grow and she'll love it as much as I do... Here's hoping! Chaton's World: A Working Mom's Quest for Balance in Stilettos: There's no place like Charlottesville... : In Charlottesville, Virginia , everything seems nicer. The fruit tastes sweeter. The mood seems more peaceful. And, the countryside seem...

Appeal to Congress by Working Moms: Get Rid of Daylight Savings Time!

Image
I made an "appeal" to Congress last year to abolish Daylight Savings Time . I ask all working moms to do the same.   We struggled to get up this morning. We went to bed at the regular time, but weren't prepared to give up that hour. I know that it's going to be tough until we get back on schedule. (Fortunately, it's a sunny day in Pittsburgh . So, there's hope to make this a great day!) Any other families struggling with Daylight Savings Time? Perhaps we should get a petition going?! Happy International Women's Day: Let's Celebrate Women!

Image
Even though I've had some posts lately criticizing high profile women like Marissa Mayer and Sheryl Sandberg , I remain a huge fan of women and believe that International Women's Day is a great time to acknowledge our accomplishments.   International Women's Day is a Time to Celebrate!   Do we have a lot of progress to make in workplace equality, pay equity and acknowledgement of the contributions of mothers?  Absolutely. However, have we come a long way? You betcha baby! Here's a link to a prior post that discusses this remarkable day, and the many challenges that women face, in more detail, Chaton's World: A Mom's Quest for Balance in Stilettos: International Women's Day: Let's Celebrate Women!   (It would be really great if this time next year, America makes this a national holiday...) Mommy Mondays: Family Photos From the Weekend!

Image
Here is a peek into Chaton's World. I spent the weekend doing things I love to do. I got the opportunity to appear on television on PCNC "Night Talk" and I believe that I represented myself well. I am hopeful that it will lead to more opportunities. I also had the opportunity to have some great family time. As I mentioned previously, on Saturday, we attended the Children's Festival in Pittsburgh and enjoyed ourselves. I am hopeful that it will lead to more opportunities... :-) Of course the toddler had a tantrum, but that goes with the territory. Since we have a great kid, her tantrums are shortlived. So, the fun definitely outweighs the problems. Still, I know that a standoff is imminent.  I need to get my game up though. Right now, I think that she could take me! Below are photos of the weekend. I hope that you enjoy them. I had a great time! This is me, Rod Doss, Khari Mosley, and Ed Gainey after our appearance on PCNC "Night Talk" this

I have been neglecting this blog. Life has been distracting me so much that I haven't have time to share. During this time, I have experienced love, disappointment, and success. In a word, I have been living! I don't have time to discuss the above in detail, but don't worry. Soon, I will be updating you about all that has been happening in Chaton's World. Until then, take care, and don't do anything that I wouldn't do... :-) Related articles Diane Mizota and Chaton Turner chat at the BlogHer'12 Conference (chatonsworld.blogspot.com)

My Life...

Thank you for reading my blog. While I love writing it, I do hope that others read it and enjoy it. If you're seeking a dose of Chaton that has been unrealized, check out http://ezinearticles.com. Some topics are too complex for Chaton's world, but they will give you insight into my life, hopes, and dreams. And if you know me, and if you're lucky, you may see yourself reflected in my comments. By way of example, if I randomly reference the country of Sweden , know that I do it, with authority, at least vicariously... For instance, I know that the Swedes are sexually liberal. And for those suspicious types, this is not just because I embrace any culture that embraces the sexual equality of women... I have three ties to Sweden, unusual for a little Black girl from Rochester, New York . My mother and aunt have visited there to attend a wedding. I have a friend who works for Cover Girl cosmetics who is there now. And, because I am open to finding love whereev
