A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

The Summer Is My New Boyfriend...

Dreaming of Summer
I have fallen in love and this love has been a passionate one. And while it will not last forever, I know that this love is special.

The summer is my new boyfriend. You must enjoy the summer the same way that you enjoy a fling-- intensely, passionately, and with the knowledge that it will not last forever. A fling can be just what you need to make your life more glamorous. A fling does not bog you down with the baggage and work of everyday life. You enjoy it for what it is, ignore any unpleasantness, and commence to enjoying the infatuation and the passion for its own sake.

If you want to enjoy summer, you have to make it your mission to enjoy it when its time and not just wait to enjoy the memories. Farmers’ markets are one of the things that the summer was made for.

If you really want to savor the season, buy local and eat in season fruits. Nothing is sweeter than a strawberry in the summer time. There is nothing better than the sweet and tangy taste of a tomato sandwich. Sautéed Vidalia onions add flair to most meals. They are spicy and sweet all at the same time.

Throw in a tasty meal and sundae, and it feels luxurious and somewhat decadent. The time passes so slowly during those patio lunches. There is nothing more perfect, and you always hate when it ends.

You must enjoy summer for its own sake. On a recent trip to Mexico, I was laying in the sun it reminded me of making love. As I lay there, at first I was resistant, I was preoccupied by my concerns from work, I was distracted by my problems with my relationship, but the longer I remained in the sun, the more I began to relax. I gave in to the sensation and my mood was transformed.

While I have had many summers, this is the first that has made me fall in love. This summer has affected me like none has before. It has caressed me with its warmth, kissed my cheeks with its breeze, and the sunshine has given me a glow. And while I know that it cannot last forever, I am enjoying my love affair. And I know that I shall savor the memories after the summer is over.
