A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

“Leading While Carrying It All: Power, Pressure & Purpose”

  • Just another female lawyer who is also juggling the job of being a mother!

I am raising my high school age daughter and two sons--a seventh grader and a precocious third grader in Pittsburgh.  I am a lawyer, a public speaker, a runner, and a writer. I started this blog because I like to write, and I thought that it was time to share my writing with others. Initially, I was nervous that I wouldn't find an audience, but I have. And that inspires me to write more!

Originally from Rochester, NY, I am one young professional Pittsburgh successfully roped in. I came here more than seven years ago to accept a position as an attorney with a large organization believing that I would only stay a few years. However, I fell in love and have
made Pittsburgh my home.  Now, Pittsburgh is a part of me and I have become a part of this city. In addition to practicing law, mothering and blogging, I am an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Not everything I do is related to the law! I have tried a lot of things.  I was a cheerleader in high school and retain that enthusiasm for life.  I have worked on a skeet shooting range and been an aerobics instructor.  Before practicing law I had a career in sales and marketing.  I have sold candy for M&M/Mars and ran successful campaigns for the Dial Corporation.  At one point, I even tried out for "The Apprentice". Through that process I had an audience with the former president of The United States of America, Donald Trump. Now, that seems surreal...

"I am not just a mom, I'm a cool mom"!

When I’m not practicing law, I try to give back to the community in as many ways as possible. I was recently elected to serve as President of a local Foundation, I am on the board of WQED, and I am a member of the Women’s Leadership Circle of United Way. I have also mentored several students bound for college. Come election time, you can always find me volunteering to protect the rights of voters seeking to participate in the political process. I even managed to get promoted twice at my "real job" after becoming a mom!

Sometimes my life is a bit overwhelming, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Writing this blog is often my “Me Time.” I share what is going on in Chaton’s World.   On this blog I share my views, from politics to motherhood. It helps me process everything going on in my life. I hope that my experiences and opinions help you to make sense of your world.

I also hope that this blog helps you understand that things get a little crazy for everyone. However, never forget that the best is truly yet to come.
