A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

A Peek Into the Life of a Working Mom: Katy Perry Inspires Me and My Toddler

Truthfully, I have weakness for pop music.  As my brother says if it's a song that's popular on the radio, I like it.  That's probably why I buy the "NOW This is Music CDs".  NOW This is Music 48 include Katy Perry's "Roar" as the Number One song.  That decision changed my life, literally.

One day, I was in the car with my kids and played the CD. My kids are 3 and 4 months.  So, it can be challenging to find something we all enjoy.  To be fair, the baby is fairly easy to please.  But the toddler is a different story! Roar gave us something to enjoy together.  She calls it "Oh, Oh, Oh"!

While I was on maternity leave I was able to take my daughter to camp and pick her up. I enjoyed this immensely and we started a new routine.  We would sing "our song", "Roar" on the way there and on the way home. I wish I had the camera that seems to follow the Kardashians everywhere so that you could fully appreciate the experience. However, since I don't, I simply encourage you to imagine those in the photo below belting out these lyrics,

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
