Easter Reminded Me of the Miracles That Are My Children

Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. Below is a tale of my road to becoming the mother of three. It was a road filled with joys and disappointments. However, I wouldn't giving nothing for my journey now. Here's to embracing every step of the journey, even the painful ones, and embracing the lessons learned along the way.

A Peek Into the Life of a Working Mom: Taking Time for Me On Broadway

I love my family.  Lord knows I do. However,  sometimes I need to leave them in order to really appreciate them!
Because I love my family though, I like my time away from them to matter. Last weekend, my time away was epic. A very talented friend, Monica Newman McCluney, put on a fantastic event for her class at Spelman College. They convened in New York to celebrate the accomplishments of their classmate and I joined them. They were generous enough to share their sisterhood with me. I returned the favor by thoroughly enjoying myself!

Champagne, a perfect end to a great evening!

There's Nothing Like a Broadway Show to Make Your Feel Sophisticated

The weekend began with a happy hour on Friday night, concluded with Sunday brunch and was punctuated by a Broadway show in between. I missed the happy hour on Friday night because I am only allowed to be away from home for about 36 hours. Still, it was a thrilling trip. The sun was bright. The sky was clear. And the play was riveting!

The show, Eclipsed, stars Lupita Nyong'o and is powerful. It portrays the dehumanization and abuse of women that occurred during the Liberian Civil war. It also shows the horrific abuse of those women who were too often casualties of warfare. It is provocative and incredibly well acted. Definitely worth seeing.

Lobster and Shrimp Spring Roll

Nothing Beats NYC!

It was the kind of weekend that could only happen in New York City without your kids and husband. After the play, and reception, it was midnight and we dined at Tao, one of my absolute favorite NYC spots. When you dine at Tao you feel instantly cool. I had the lobster and shrimp spring rolls and they were AMAZING! As far as I am concerned, they could build an entire restaurant around those things. I restricted myself to one order. However, I could have easily eaten two.

Sometimes Working Moms Need a Break

The coolest thing about the trip was that I had complete control over what I did. I wasn't responsible for taking care of my children or my husband. I had no housework responsibilities.  I was free to enjoy time with my girlfriends. And even though it was only an hour flight away and I was only gone overnight, it felt like another world.

The experience was special. Being an honorary member of the Spelman Squad was really fun. Those Spelman girls know how to party!

Even though it was hard getting away--my daughter cried when she heard I was leaving--it was worth it. Sometimes, even if your family doesn't understand, you have to get away. And when you do, you'll be better for it. That said, there is a price to pay. I recommend returning with gifts so that all is forgiven!
