A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

More Sleep for Mommy!

A mommy friend on Facebook recently asked, “Is anyone else tired of being tired?” A lot of people agreed with her.  I think that her comment resonated with so many people because mothers struggle to find time of their own.

Granted, she has two children and her demands are more onerous than mine. Still, I understood her sentiment. This week I am committed to getting more rest. If you read my posts last week you know that I have been sleep deprived for the entire time I have been a mom (over 17 months).  This week though, I am committed to getting more.
I’m not going to set unattainable goals that leave me feeling like a failure when they are unachieved.  Instead, I have achievable goals. I’ve been averaging 6 hours a night most weeks. This week I am committed to averaging 6 hours and 20 minutes.  That might seem lame to you, but it seems like heaven to me.
