One Secret to a Working Mom Success: Make Family Events More Enjoyable With Friends

Better Together: Why Inviting Another Family Makes Activities More Fun #FamilyFun Sometimes family activities can feel like another item on the to-do list. However, doing those activities with another family makes them more fun! Whether it’s a trip to an amusement park , a visit to the local pool , or trip to a pumpkin patch , including another family can multiply the fun in amazing ways. One of my favorite moms to collaborate with is my friend, Ayana Ledford who's pictured above with her daughter Sahar. We have done all of the things listed as seemingly random examples above and here is how including her and her daughter (and sometimes her son too) has made the events more fun. On the date above, Ayana almost left the venue because parking was a nightmare. That said, she hung in there and we would up having a great time!

An Ode to a Martha's Vineyard Vacation

On Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard

An Ode to Martha's Vineyard

I close my eyes; and, I experience heaven...

It looks like sunny skies, blue waters and beautiful gardens full of hydrangeas.

It smells like salty air, lobster rolls cooking and the aroma of fresh flowers.

It feels like soft sans with bits of rock mixed with cool breezes and a hint of rain falling on my arms.

I close my eyes; and, I am at the Vineyard.

Traveling to Martha's Vineyard is a Process

I never wanted to be one of those people who said, "You need to experience it to understand." So, instead, I am sharing what I know. Before, I do that though, I shall disclose a rather obvious casualty of the pandemic that I experienced, cystic acne on my chin. It's obvious in the photo. So, I thought I'd explain. Working out in the gym, with a mask, left me with the worst chin acne of my life. The irony, I was working out extra hard because of my planned, beach vacations. The moral is, "vanity has its consequences!"

Here's what I learned about traveling to "The Vineyard", it is a process. You can fly directly to Martha's Vineyard. Many of the people I traveled with did that. It was triple the price to fly to there as opposed to Boston though. So, I opted for Boston. I ignorantly thought that I could Uber from Logan Airport to the ferry location. However, I was wrong. No Ubers were available to take me there. The app gave me the option to upgrade to XL. However, it was $475! Yeah, that's not a typo. When I researched the price for a Town Car, it was only $300. So, I decided to ride in style!

Here's the tip of the century. Taking the Peter Pan Bus is both convenient and inexpensive. I took it on the way back. Still, taking the Town Car the way there was super fun!

Taking a Girls' Trip is the Best!

Me and my friends, Tyyawdi and Tasha

I had the privilege of traveling to Martha's Vineyard with two of my friends this summer. They took a risk traveling together. They didn't know one another before the trip. Still, they agreed to come. And, we had a great time. I learned that they are both my friends because we all share things in common--a love of life, a love of fashion, and a love of great food!

My traveling companions were Tasha Grinnell and Tyyawdi Hands. I've known both of these beauties for years. Aren't they beautiful?!

The food on the Vineyard was amazing!!!

Atria in Edgartown, MA

My bestie, Tasha Grinnell is a foodie and researched all of the best restaurants on the Vineyard. Because of her an her efforts, we ate well! That said, the great thing about the Vineyard is that great food is quite plentiful, especially if you enjoy lobster! We had a goal to try lobster rolls at every place where they were offered. We succeeded, and by general consensus, the best lobster roll was at The Lookout Tavern.

This Trip Fueled My Soul

In West Tisbury, Massachusetts

This trip was exactly what I needed even though I didn't know it. Like every other working mom, I have been working and mothering under very unique conditions over the past year. I didn't realize until I was holding my breath for a year and a half. Although, I think I handled it well, it was a lot. As one mom said, "Sometimes you just have to cry in your closet." I didn't do a lot of that. However, I have been moving, thinking and doing. It wasn't until I was with my friends who are self sufficient that I had a clue into how much I have been doing. On The Vineyard, I exhaled. And while I know that I am super privileged to have been able to do this, I encourage all working moms to find a time and a place to do the same. I SO needed it!
