Most Working Moms Find Snow Days Challenging, but not Bethenny Frankel (#enoughalready)

Image
"SNOW DAY!!!" — Bethenny Frankel (@Bethenny) February 3, 2014  (Twitter)   I read this tweet by Bethenny Frankel the other day. “Snow day” followed by three exclamation points suggests that she was happy about it.   I love Bethenny, and I also come from a "place of yes".  However, the enthusiasm with which she made this Tweet reminded me that even though she thinks that she like the rest of us working moms she is not.   This Winter Has Been Long and We Are Over It This winter has been cold and long, even though it’s only the first Monday of February.   And the average working mom has lost her enthusiasm for snow days.   Indeed, she has come to despise them. Working moms cleave to their schedules like a starving man cleaves to a loaf of bread.   And this bad weather has made life unpredictable.   The snowy days have been interrupting her work schedule, depleting her PTO days and made it nearly impossible to plan anything.   Indeed, controlling the weat

Would Kim Kardashian Make a Good Mommy Blogger?!

Image
Kim Kardashian is pregnant by Kanye West ! Is that news? Well it was a few days ago. However, since I returned to work after the holiday season on Wednesday this is the first chance I have had to write about it.   Kim Kardashian's Pregnancy News Disrupted My Blogging Schedule   Quite frankly, this news has disrupted my planned writing topics. I have so many things to share about my own life. The holidays were awesome for my family. We were blessed to be together and even more blessed that we actually liked it (at least most of the time...) Still, like all families we had our conflicts. Also, having an extended time off of work in your home gives you time to reflect on some things.  I am convinced now more than ever that there are no miracle gremlins who will do your housework.  Based on what I have seen on the Internet, I hoped that the " Elf on the Shelf " might do it. Alas, he did not.

Twitter Tuesday: Interesting Women on Twitter

You know that I am fascinated by the accomplished women on reality TV like Bethenny Frankel and Kris Jenner .   Well, I am also fascinated by accomplished women in business. And I am always excited when I find these women on Twitter. Below are some that are worth following!

Tip for Avoiding Stress During the Holiday Season: A Personal Assistant

Image
I have been blogging for a while. And my blogging has given me the opportunity to meet some great working women who are also on a quest for balance in their stilettos. I have asked my sisters in the struggle what they need most. Universally, they provide the same answer.   They want, they need, and they fantasize about having more time. Working Women Long for More Time. Alas, like you and me they are mere mortals.   And even if they could quit their jobs and become a stay-at-home mom they would still be cursed blessed like the rest of us. No matter how organized they become. No matter how early they manage to get up in the morning. And no matter how many Smart phones , iPads , other cool gadgets they get to make them more efficient, they would only have 24 hours in any given day to get everything done. A Personal Assistant Can Help You Get More Time. In my dream life I have a full time personal assistant who comes to my home every day and is at my beck and call and com

Five Tips for Avoiding Weight Gain During the Holidays (#TeamJenny)

Image
There are a lot of tips for avoiding weight gain during the holidays. Some from Jenny Craig , Bethenny Frankel , and my years of reading weight loss articles are listed below: 1.       Drink H20:            Drink 16 oz. of water an hour before dinner . It will fill you up. 2.       Volumetrics:       F ill your plate with mostly greens. You will full your mind into thinking that you’ve eaten a lot, but avoided lots of the calories associated with calorie laden foods like stuffing and macaroni and cheese . 3.       Diet:       Go on a diet a week before the holidays. That way, you’ll start the holiday season with some weight loss . Then, it won’t matter if you gain a few pounds. 4.       Abstain:                Avoid alcohol. Alcohol falls in the “empty calories” category. That means that you consume calories without any nutritional benefit. That means you still have to eat to get your nutrients.   Empty calories + Nutritional Calories = More than you need. 5.

Mommy Mondays: I learned the rules for receiving a FedEx Package

Image
This past Monday, I simply caught up on things like laundry and housework that we neglected over the weekend because we were way off schedule.   On Saturday, we spent what seemed like days looking for a FedEx facility to pick up a package that they refused to leave at my house because nobody was there to sign for it.   My search for the FedEx facility was an adveture! Even with Google Maps , I got terribly lost. There were lots of road closures that were not noted on Google Maps. So, I kept driving around and around and around.   What was supposed to be a 20 minute trip took over an hour. If I hadn’t been waiting for the package for awhile I would have given up.   When I finally got the package, thanks to the nice women who opened the door even though they were closed, I found out what the problem was.  I had received some wine as a present and the package had a sticker that read “ Adult signature required. Do not leave with anyone who appears to be intoxicated.” B

Friday Tip: Find Your Spark and Hustle!

Image
Yesterday, I attended Tory Johnson ’s “Spark and Hustle ”. It’s a program to help women entrepreneurs and to help other women start their own businesses . Tory’s personal story was inspiring.   I can’t possibly do her story justice, but here’s the summary. She dropped out of college to become a news reporter , at some point got laid off and still managed to have a family make her professional dreams come true.   You might even say that Tory achieved what Anne Marie Slaughter said was impossible in her Atlantic article.  Tory Johnson "has it all". The wonderful thing is that her personal mission is to help other women do the same.     She pointed out that most the reasons that people identify for not succeeding in business are excuses. She lacks a college degree and still has a successful business and a deal segment on “ Good Morning America ”.   She pointed out that the person with the most degrees is not necessarily the person with the brightest future.   Succe

A Peek Into the Life of a Blogger Mom (A Video Post!)

Image
This Sunday I am trying out the Webcam on my computer to see whether I can get it to work properly. I'd also like to know whether any of my blog readers like it.  I think it might help add some variety to my posts. Here's how the taping of this post actually happened.  Unlike Bethenny Frankel , Kim Kardashian , and even Kevin Federline , I had no camera crew taping our piece. It was just me sitting on my steps trying to figure out how to use the webcam . I definitely have lots to learn. So, please have patience with me, the blog trainers are not through with me yet! If you like this video post let me know by commenting on this blog and/or by liking my Facebook page , which is located at www.facebook.com/chatonsworldpage . (Forgive the lack of makeup and the toddler in her diaper and my hair.  This is real, reality TV! :-))   Related articles Bethenny Frankel on Marriage to Jason Hoppy: Getting Better! Mommy Mondays: Cartwheels and Confessions

Image
I have lived long enough that my life has experienced twists and turns and has been turned upside down. I won't bore you with my tales of loves, loss, and libations . Those tales are best left for another post! In that regard, the "confessions" part of this title is a bit misleading.  However, my intern, Olivia, has converted me to her love of alliterations with me and "Cartwheels and Confessions" sounded good.  Seriously though, if you read between the lines you will see that I am confessing quite a bit.  Read closely! Today , I will simply tell you about how my world was turned upside down by choice. As Andre, the toddler and I went for a walk today we passed our neighbor and her six year old daughter on the lawn. The neighbor’s daughter was practicing her gymnastics from her camp cheerleading camp.    She had to master cartwheels and round offs.   Because I am thirteen going on thirty (or something like that...) I decided to show the six year old

Friday Tip: Don't Stop Believing!

Image
"If you can believe, all things are possible to those who believe." - Mark 9:23 First, I must confess that Lou Gramm attended my high school. So, I probably quote " Journey " songs more than the average Black girl. And my years in Catholic school and in AWANA  make the Bible a common sourcee of inspiration too. Now that true confessions are out of the way, I want to talk about my dreams.  I have dreamed about becoming a freelance writer for some time.  I have also dreamed about being on television.  I am happy to report that my first freelance story was published today by Parent Society. Even though I have been publishing my posts on my blog for years, my heart soared when I saw my name on the byline for my Parent Society article. Check it out at the link below: " Disney , The Place Where Dreams Come True" http://parentsociety.com/mom/disney-the-place-where-dreams-come-true I know that getting published in this magazine is not the equival

Mommy and Toddler Adventures!

Image
Today, the Andre, the toddler and I went to the Pittsburgh Convention Center and picked up my number for the Pittsburgh Marathon ! In the interest of accuracy, I picked up my number for the marathon relay . I am merely running a leg of the marathon.  It's a good thing too. I have not been training nearly as hard as I wish that I had.  Between the working and the mothering and the blogging and the vacationing my training has been a little sporadic. It's actually funny that I almost didn't even accept the invitation to run a relay leg.  I thought that would be chickening out. I thought that I "owed it to myself" to at least run the half marathon.  I am a runner after all and previously trained for the full marathon. (Unfortunately I was not able to run the marathon that year. You can read about my severe illness and miraculous recovery at Lessons From My Health Scare). Since I am pulled in so many directions I am glad that I did the smart thing and merely

What Ordinary Women Can Learn From Kris Jenner and Bethenny Frankel

Image
Photo credit, The Source As I mentioned, I have recently read books by Kris Jenner and Bethenny Frankel , two women who have impressed me with their success. Reading about them has renewed my desire to create an even better life for me and my family . I want our family to have a life where our work is our joy and not our burden. Even though we have a comfortable living, Andre and I have to work to provide for our family. We want to leave our daughter with a strong legacy and give her the support to live her dreams . These are two women who have helped renew my interest in accomplishing my own goals.

Being a mother may be the secret to innovation...

Image
They say that necessity is the motherhood of invention.  However, lately I am becoming convinced that being a mother is the secret to innovation.  I read A Place of Yes by Bethenny Frankel  a while ago and recently started reading Kris Jenner ’s book, Kris Jenner and all things Kardashian .  I was impressed by these stories and concluded that these are two mothers who have turned their innovation into cash. While both women star in their reality TV shows , Bethenny Ever After and Keeping Up With the Kardashians , respectively, their real genius is in their ability to make lemons out of lemonade or margaritas out of tequila since it has been reported that Bethenny made about $90 Million Dollars last year from the sale of her Skinnygirl cocktail line. It has also been reported that the Kardashian family made $65 Million dollars last year from being the Kardashians (among other things that involves making appearances, selling clothing, and advertising goods for others). That is s

The Walk of Shame "Retail Style"

Image
When you shop as much as I do, you are bound to have engaged in a decent amount of scandalous retail behavior. As a teenager, I begged my mother for clothes in the store. I have tried on clothes in line. I have bought a party outfit on my way to the party. While somewhat unorthodox, these are not shameful activities. However, recently I witnessed the walk of shame performed with such finesse that I had to write about it. A couple of weeks ago my sister and I were shopping when I saw a girl and a guy with whom we had been partying the night before. As I said hello, I realized that they were both wearing the same clothes from the party. Indeed, it was a Sunday afternoon and she was wearing messy hair, a cobalt blue shirt, a thigh high mini skirt , and a guilty grin. She handled the situation with style though. She simply looked me in the eye, winked and said, “girl, don’t even ask…” While I hope that I am never forced to continue the party the next day without a shower, I had to
