Working Mom Confession: My Smart Phone May Be Swallowing My Life

Image
Get Smart (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) "Are you working today – or just checking e-mail???" (sent by a colleague on a Saturday afternoon.) As I referenced in my post about "National Flex Day", I have come to realize that smart phones are a great intrusion on our personal time and not the key to freedom. Indeed, we are constantly tethered to the office and our colleagues and supervisors often expect constant access to us.          Where I work there are often extended email exchanges after 8:00PM and over the weekend. I am not so impressed by the initial sender. If they are like me, they probably sent the email to ensure that they didn't forget. I am really impressed by those who respond and engage in banter at 10:00 PM. Were they waiting with expectancy to receive an email? Or were they also in the process of sending off messages to people to avoid a costly memory lapse? With the work day constantly encroaching on our private time it appears tha

Mommy Mondays: Toddlers Teach Us Lessons

The umbrella that inspired it all... This Monday morning my daughter was excited. She was excited to go to school. She was also excited to use her new " Hello Kitty " umbrella. It was raining in Pittsburgh this AM. While most people may have been a little down, my daughter was downright giddy! As we walked to school she marveled at the rain, the multi-colored leaves and the piles of leaves on the ground. She strolled, smiled and twirled her umbrella.  it was clear that she was amazed by the splendor of the world and thought it should be enjoyed. There are lessons for working moms in this scenario. Inauguration 2013 Interrupted My Writing Schedule...

Image
I attended President Obama’s second inauguration swearing in ceremony and The Inaugural Ball on Monday. Both were amazing experiences that intend to share with you. However, I’m going to have to share them later! Inauguration 2013 Interrupted My Writing Schedule Traveling to DC and partying has thrown a wrench in my writing schedule.   As you know, I am a working mom. So, after I returned home I had to get back into the swing of things—mothering and working! Needless to say, I had a lot of catching up to do! So, what's the result? This mommy blogger has a lot of things to say, but little time to write. I've also been exhausted since I returned! Don't worry, I’ll make the time to write soon though. In the meantime, check out photos from the inauguration at http://chatonsworld.blogspot.com/p/out-and-about.html . Mommy Mondays: Preparing for Halloween

Image
I consider sunny days in Pittsburgh akin to holidays. Today was a sunny day in Pittsburgh and I was thrilled! I greeted the day by seeing our jack-o-lanterns. They made me smile because I remembered our impromptu “Pumpkin Party” from the night before. Andre loves enjoying the moment, which helps to make my life even sweeter. On Sunday after our run, he declared that we would be carving pumpkins in the evening.   He called our families and told them about the pumpkin carving plan and invited them to join us.   Because we were expecting a crowd, we had to prepare food for them. So, in an instant, our Sunday turned from relaxed to hectic, but it was so much fun! Below are some photos from our visit to the pumpkin farm where we selected our pumpkins. I'll post some photos of the Jack-O-Lanterns soon! Reflecting on my Sunday made my Monday a great one. How are you getting ready for Halloween ?!

Mommy Mondays: I learned the rules for receiving a FedEx Package

Image
This past Monday, I simply caught up on things like laundry and housework that we neglected over the weekend because we were way off schedule.   On Saturday, we spent what seemed like days looking for a FedEx facility to pick up a package that they refused to leave at my house because nobody was there to sign for it.   My search for the FedEx facility was an adveture! Even with Google Maps , I got terribly lost. There were lots of road closures that were not noted on Google Maps. So, I kept driving around and around and around.   What was supposed to be a 20 minute trip took over an hour. If I hadn’t been waiting for the package for awhile I would have given up.   When I finally got the package, thanks to the nice women who opened the door even though they were closed, I found out what the problem was.  I had received some wine as a present and the package had a sticker that read “ Adult signature required. Do not leave with anyone who appears to be intoxicated.” B

Mommy Mondays: Mondays can be a Special Kind of Crazy

Image
As a working mom, experiencing a Monday is kind of like living in the Twilight Zone . This morning I had a meeting downtown at 8:30 AM.   The meeting was at a different place and earlier than I usually work. Since I live near downtown and it was a nice day I decided to walk . I was excited to walk because usually I drive to work. Also, I was proud of myself since walking was a green choice. Walking took planning. Walking meant that I had to wear flats and I had to select clothes that went with them. I have a lot of clothes, but at 5’2” I usually wear stilettos.   However, there’s no way that I could teeter all the way to the meeting in heels.   I settled on a pair of persimmon colored Franco Sarto loafers with a slight heel. They had rubber soles so they were perfect. I found an olive, Marc New York and paired it with a striped blazer. I was excited that I found a good outfit and shoes that I wouldn’t mind wearing all day instead of lugging a pair of shoes with me. When you’re w

Mommy Mondays: Our Memorial Day

Image
The first part of my Memorial Day was filled with a lot of housework . On Saturday we started cleaning and had not finished by Monday morning.  We're behind on housework because we're us and because our nanny was on vacation last week. Today I made completed some of the projects we started over the weekend. It wasn't necessarily my plans for the holiday, but it did feel really good knowing that our house no longer looks like a tornado went through it! Don't cry for me though. I also had a lot of fun today. Any day that I spend with the toddler is a great one. Today we spent all day together. She is growing and maturing so fast. Today, she educated me about how she likes to eat her meals. If today is any indication, we're going to have to retire her high chair ! Andre had to work, but when he got off of work we went swimming at my parents' house. Who can complain after spending time at the pool?! Also, my mom made us dinner, which meant that I didn't

Just Another Manic Monday...

Image
It's Monday morning! I'm actually really not manic, but the 80's song did make for a good title of this post. I have great hopes for this week even though it is turning colder. We have had summer-like weather for weeks. It's a little disappointing now that the temperature seems to be getting more seasonal.  I'mtrying to just be thankful for the sunshine we've enjoyed instead of lamenting its loss. After all, I do live in Pittsburgh . I really shouldn't have high hopes about the weather anyway! Yesterday we had Sunday dinner with my mother and brother, which was great. I have really come to value these dinners. It's great seeing how my daughter gets to know my family.  These little things really do mean so much. Monday represents the beginning of the workweek . I vow not to simply wish the week away longing for the weekend.  Instead, I will focus on what I have to accomplish and on the blessings that I have. I'm also focus on planning our vaca

Appeal to Congress by Working Moms: Get Rid of Daylight Savings Time!

Image
As you know this week I have focused on the great Pittsburgh weather and my sleep deprivation . ( Today was another gorgeous day too!) Despite my general good mood this week I have been struggling to get up in the mornings. With my focus on sleep deprivation, I had been thinking that it might be time to revisit how I spend my time at night. It’s not noteworthy to think that more sleep might be a good idea. However, I’ve been perplexed about why I’ve been struggling this week. Indeed our entire family has been a bit off. The baby has been going to bed later, getting cranky earlier and then not going to sleep as soon after she’s put down. She’s also been waking up later. Andre, who is not generally a morning person anyway, has been struggling to wake up in the AM too.   Daylight Savings Time Disrupts Our Biological Clocks We have been happy with the sunshine and warm weather, but our internal clocks seem to be a bit off. Today, it dawned on me. This week IS diff

What Happened on Monday (Part I)

Image
So how did this Monday turn out? All in all it was good. But, there were some twists and turns. My work days tend to be jam packed. Today was no different.   Work was hectic—full of projects and deadlines. I made it through with pride. I didn’t even mind that the sun failed to make an appearance. Better a dreary Monday than a dreary Sunday. When you live in Pittsburgh sun can be an infrequent visitor. Since Sunday had been so nice I had a sun hangover from the day before and it took a while to get over it. It made me not even mind that it was cold and rainy as I walked to a meeting. Even though I was carrying an umbrella I got wet. It wasn’t that warm summer rain either. It was the “wow this rain is hard and cold. I should have worn tights instead of traipsing around in bare legs in the middle of March in Pittsburgh” kind of rain. Despite the cold and the rain I nearly skipped to my meeting.   Indeed, I was fairly content all day until I realized two things. I may have forgotten t

Twitter Tuesday!

Image
I know that it’s like I am playing peekaboo with Twitter Tuesday.   Sometimes you look for it and it just isn’t there!   The past couple of days I was distracted a bit.   I was preparing a guest post for another blog http://dianereiter.com and neglected my own. (Super thrilled to be a guest blogger though!)   Also, it was a rare warm winter day in Pittsburgh .   So, last night the baby and went for a walk.   And we had the best time! A few weeks ago, when we returned to work after the holidays, Tuesday came and went without a posting. I was confused and missed posting an entry because I thought it was Monday. My confusion lasted all week.   This time I remembered as soon as I woke up today and said, “tell me it’s not Wednesday!”   Nobody answered. Perhaps I'm the only working mom who sometimes confuses her days, but I don't think so. I think that most moms are doing the best that they can in the midst of laundry, dishes, and trying to brush their teeth.   They are d

Smiles instead of regrets...

Image
Can it really be that Monday is just on the horizon again? It seems as though Friday was just moments ago, but instead, it's late Sunday night and my mind races about all of the tasks that are left undone. Although there was no time for mopping, there was plenty of time for dancing and dinners. Although there was no time for cleaning the bathrooms, there was surprisingly plenty of time for romance and kissing in the rain. Although there was no time for laundry, there was just enough time to share a brownie sundae while the sun set. Although there was no time for calling out of state friends to catch up, I managed to fit in one cocktail on the patio at a neighborhood restaurant. I even fit in a gala, for the Pittsburgh DiverseCity festival. Time is an amazingly fluid concept. Although we deny it, we always make time to do what you want to do. The Bible says, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also". People often deny this. They often talk a

We're not in college anymore...

Image
Everyone has an event that reminds them that they lack the exuberance of a college co-ed. It's not that you are unable to do the things that you used to do. It is that you simply can't bounce back the way that you used to. Many of my male friends wear suits during the week, but on Saturday morning , they are transformed into Lebron James wannabes. They suit up, don their sneakers and head to the court for a pick up game of basketball. I have seen several of these men on Monday morning, in their suits limping. The story is always the same, "I went up for a lay up, but came down wrong. I don't understand what happened..." As I have mentioned previously, my girlfriends and I often have cocktails after work on Friday nights. We'll pick a hot venue (sometimes hard for Pittsburgh :-)) One cocktail turns into another. We'll decide to have dinner. Then we may have another cocktail. There are cocktails, dinner, and at times dancing. Times are

It's Monday!

Image
Since Monday is the first day of the week, one would think that on Mondays I would report to work fresh faced with my hair done. However, instead of greeting the week refreshed, I am generally incredibly tired. Somehow, I always run out of time on Sunday night. My weekend generally begins with friends and a cocktail on Friday night. Sometimes, I am in Pittsburgh and sometimes I am on the road, but either way, it's the same routine. As I sip that cocktail, I am full of excitement about the weekend and how I have two full days of freedom ahead of me. It's like a weekly vacation, right? Wrong! When I wake up on Saturday morning , after having my requisitie tea and toast with honey , I am reminded that my kitchen counters are slightly sticky. They have honey residue accumulated from Monday-Friday's tea and toast with honey. The floors of the great room and the furniture has managed to accumulate dust during the week. There's a pile of laundry in the hamper
